What I Look for Before Installing a Drybase Shower Tray

I am a wet-room installer based in the English Midlands, and I have spent more than 15 years rebuilding leaking showers in houses, flats, and small commercial properties. I have fitted hundreds of tiled shower areas, including compact enclosures in loft conversions and larger level-access bathrooms for customers with limited mobility. A Drybase shower tray can create a clean, practical foundation, but I still treat the installation as a waterproofing job rather than a simple tray replacement. Most failures I uncover started with a rushed decision hidden beneath the tiles.

Why I Prefer a Purpose-Made Tiled Tray

I often work in bathrooms where a standard acrylic tray would sit too high or leave an awkward step at the entrance. A tiled shower tray gives me more freedom to create a lower transition while keeping a controlled fall toward the drain. In one narrow bathroom I renovated last winter, the doorway left less than 700 millimetres between the wall and the basin. A carefully positioned former allowed me to keep the shower open without making the room feel cramped.

I also like having a solid surface designed to receive tile rather than trying to create a slope from loose timber, patching compound, and guesswork. Site-built falls can work in experienced hands, but they take time and depend heavily on the condition of the floor below. A preformed tray gives me a known starting point. That saves effort, though it never removes the need for careful preparation.

The finished appearance is another reason I use this type of system. I can continue the same floor tile into the shower area, provided the tile size and drain arrangement suit the tray. One customer last spring wanted a calm stone-effect floor with no bright white tray breaking up the room. I used a smaller matching tile inside the wet area, which followed the slopes more neatly than the large tiles used across the rest of the bathroom.

Planning the Installation Before I Lift a Tool

I start by checking where the waste pipe can run, because the drain position affects nearly every decision that follows. I measure the joist direction, the available depth, and the route to the soil connection before I order materials. For technical product information, I sometimes refer a customer or another installer to the Drybase shower tray resource while we discuss the proposed floor build-up. I would rather change the layout on paper than discover a joist directly beneath the drain opening after the old floor has been removed.

I also check the shower screen position before deciding the exact tray location. A screen fixed too close to the edge can leave the outer floor exposed to regular splashing, even if the tray itself drains correctly. In a typical 900 millimetre shower area, moving the glass by 30 or 40 millimetres can change how well the water stays contained. Small adjustments matter.

Tile choice forms part of the planning rather than the final decoration stage. Large tiles can bridge a change in slope and create raised edges unless the cuts are carefully planned. I usually draw the drain, fall lines, and proposed grout joints on a simple sketch before tiling starts. That ten-minute drawing has prevented many hours of awkward cutting.

Preparing the Floor Beneath the Tray

I never judge a floor by how it looks from above. Once I remove the old covering, I check for movement, damaged board edges, loose fixings, and signs of past leaks around the waste. A floor can appear solid under normal foot traffic yet flex once someone stands near the unsupported edge of a cut-out. I use a long straightedge and check the area from several directions.

Timber floors usually need more attention than customers expect. I look at joist spacing, board thickness, and any pipe holes that may have weakened the surrounding structure. On one refurbishment, a previous installer had cut nearly half the depth from a joist to make room for a waste pipe. I stopped the shower work until the carpenter had reinforced that section properly.

The tray needs even support across its underside, not a few hard spots surrounded by gaps. I follow the relevant installation instructions for the chosen system and make sure the bedding material is spread consistently. If one corner sits a few millimetres high, forcing it down with extra screws can distort the surface. I prefer to lift it, correct the base, and set it again.

Getting the Drain Connection Right

The drain is the part I test most carefully because a slow leak can remain hidden for months. I dry-fit the waste before securing the tray, then check that the pipe reaches without tension or a forced angle. A connector pulled sideways may look sealed at first, but movement and temperature changes can disturb it later. I want the fittings to meet naturally.

Access also matters. In some ground-floor bathrooms, I can inspect the connection from below through a small ceiling opening or from an adjacent cupboard. Upstairs, I may create a removable access panel if the layout permits it. I do not like burying a complicated connection where nobody can reach it without breaking tiles.

Before waterproofing covers the area, I run several litres of water through the waste and inspect every joint with a dry cloth. I also leave water standing around the drain connection for a short period where the system allows that test. A tissue or cloth shows a tiny weep sooner than a quick visual check. I check it twice.

Waterproofing Beyond the Tray Surface

I treat the tray as one part of a connected waterproof zone. The vulnerable areas are often the perimeter joints, internal corners, pipe penetrations, and the transition between the tray and surrounding boards. I use compatible tapes, collars, sealers, and waterproof boards according to the system design. Mixing unrelated products can create a joint that looks tidy but has poor long-term adhesion.

Wall preparation begins before I apply any waterproof coating. Dust, loose plaster, and uneven board joints can prevent tapes from sitting flat. I pay close attention to the bottom 150 millimetres of the wall because this area receives repeated splashing and cleaning water. A neat bead of visible silicone cannot compensate for a weak joint behind the tile.

I also extend the protected area beyond the obvious shower footprint where regular splashing is likely. In an open shower, water can travel farther than people expect, especially with a powerful handset angled toward the entrance. On a recent installation, I waterproofed the full floor of a small bathroom measuring roughly 2 metres by 2.4 metres. That choice added some material cost, but it gave the customer a more forgiving room.

Setting Tiles Across the Falls

I choose tile format with the tray geometry in mind. Mosaics and smaller tiles usually follow multiple slopes with fewer raised corners, while larger tiles may need envelope cuts around a central drain. I set out the pattern before mixing adhesive and check where every cut will land. Poor setting-out can leave a thin strip of tile beside the drain that is difficult to fix securely.

The adhesive bed needs full, even contact because hollow areas can lead to cracked grout or loose tiles. I lift the first few tiles to check coverage rather than assuming the notched lines have collapsed correctly. Around the drain, I work slowly and keep the finished tile edges even with the drain frame. A difference of 2 millimetres can hold a visible line of water.

I respect curing times even when a project is running behind schedule. Grouting too soon can disturb tiles, while sealing corners before the surfaces are ready may trap moisture. One landlord once asked me to finish a shower for a new tenant the same evening the tiles were laid. I refused, because saving one day was not worth risking a failed floor.

Mistakes I Regularly Find During Repairs

The most common problem I see is movement beneath the tray or surrounding board. Cracked grout often appears first, followed by dark staining near the edge of the shower. By the time water marks show on the ceiling below, the timber may already have been damp for a long period. Repairing that damage can cost several thousand pounds in a larger bathroom.

I also find poorly planned falls where water collects near the entrance or beside the drain. Some installers try to correct the problem with extra adhesive while laying the tile, but thick uneven patches are hard to control. I prefer to identify slope problems before waterproofing starts. Once the membrane and tiles are down, every correction becomes more disruptive.

Another mistake is treating silicone as the main waterproof barrier. Silicone is useful at movement joints and visible changes of plane, but I do not rely on it to protect the structure underneath. Sealant eventually discolours, shrinks, or separates and will need maintenance. The concealed waterproof layer must still do its job if the visible seal begins to fail.

How I Judge a Finished Shower

I test the completed floor with the shower running at normal pressure rather than pouring one bucket directly into the drain. I watch how water moves from the corners, around the user’s standing position, and toward the entrance. A well-built tray should clear steadily without leaving broad puddles after the water stops. A few droplets on textured tile are normal, but a deep patch points to a fall or tiling problem.

I inspect the glass fixings, wall junctions, drain frame, and outer floor before handing the room back. I explain which joints the customer should monitor and how often the visible sealant may need attention. Harsh cleaning tools can damage grout and sealant, so I usually recommend a soft brush and a suitable bathroom cleaner. Simple care extends the life of the installation.

I also tell customers to report movement, repeated damp smells, or fresh cracks rather than waiting for water to appear downstairs. Early inspection may reveal a minor sealant issue or a loose fitting that is still easy to reach. Waiting can turn a small repair into a full strip-out. I have seen that happen too often.

I trust a Drybase shower tray when the floor beneath it is sound, the waste connection is relaxed, and every waterproof transition has been completed with care. The product provides the shape and fall, but the installer still controls the details that decide whether the shower lasts. I would rather spend an extra afternoon checking the hidden work than return months later to remove a finished tile floor. That is the standard I use in my own projects.
